The Hottest Summer Yet

Summer 2017 has been quite the season for black entertainment. Everyone loves a great TV show and film and as the summer slowly dies down to an end here’s a recap of some of the hottest shows and films along with the return of some of our favorite series! Introducing some fresh faces, exciting twists and turns and great performances from some of our favorite actors. Here’s to our favs in summer 17’


The summer opener and everyone’s all time fav came strong as OITNB released season five on Netflix back in June. The show covers the cruelty of the prison system based in a womans prison and discusses the injustices of our society. In this drama filled comedy we watch the rise and the fall of the inmates in Litchfield and witness their fight for justice as they work together and riot throughout the prison.


This incredible drama series is back for season four, as James St. Patrick “Ghost” fights for his freedom. In pasts seasons it has seemed as though James had it all, from his gorgeous wife and kids, stunning penthouse and his newest investment his nightclub, Truth. As trouble catches up it is clear James has been living a double life as Ghost. In season four we watch as James fights for his life as he tries to save his empire and family from falling.


Queen Sugar continues in its second season with the amazing breakout cast. With the opening of the Sugarcane Mill we watch as the Bordelon siblings continue to mend their relationships and wrestle with personal dramas. The show does a great way of showcasing politics, kinship and what it’s like being black in modern day America. With amazing cast members like Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Tina Lifford and the amazingly handsome Kofi Siriboe this show is definitely a must see!


Gabrielle Union stars as Mary Jane Paul, in the fourth season of Being Mary Jane and she’s back with a new look. Mary Jane, a successful TV reporter is often always looking for love in the wrong places. If you’ve seen previous seasons you have watched how Mary Jane as tried to build her career and balance her love life. In the opening season Mary Jane started in her new position as the lead anchor and continues her search for true love. We continue to watch as Mary Jane Paul builds her career and fights to cover more social conscious topics.


Insecure is back with another amazing season! Season two is off to an amazing start as Issa is the ultimate spunky/ modern day black girl. In its second season Issa is trying to get over a breakup with her ex-boyfriend, Lawrence. If you have watched the first season you were a fan of their relationship and were heartbroken as we watched it fall. As we continue to watch season two we watch the rollercoaster ride of Issa trying to piece her life back together in hopes that her relationship with Lawrence rekindles.


Girls Trip is the summer’s hottest film and is definitely a must see! The ultimate ideal girls trip to hit the big screen yet. Girls Trip is a hilarious comedy as long time girlfriends reunite and take flight to the Essence Festival hosted in New Orleans. With this star-studded cast, the movie shares the importance of friendship and keeping your loved ones close, also sharing the importance of letting loose and having a good time.


The Incredible Jessica James dropped today, July 28th on Netflix, staring Jessica Williams. The new romantic-comedy Netflix film based in New York City showcases Jessica and her struggle as she gets over a bad break up, all while she stumbles into her newfound relationship. The film displays the dating aspect of being a “woke” black woman now working her way into an interracial relationship. We follow her journey as a 25 year old trying to find her mark in life.
