Black Girls Rock is a platform created by Beverly Bond in 2006 that honors black women that are making an impact and difference in their community. Black Girls Rock aired Tuesday, August 22, 2017 on BET.
The star-studded night was hosted by Taraji P. Henson and the show opened up with a performance by the talented SZA who performed Normal Girl from her latest album CTRL. More performances included Anthony Hamilton, Ledisi, Tyrese, Tasha Cobb and our favorite India Arie.
Some awesome black women were honored for their achievements. Honorees included: Auntie Maxine Waters, everyone’s favorite cousin Issa Rae, the flower child Solange Knowles, our sweet little sister who is well beyond her years Yara Shahidi and many more.
Maxine Waters delivered an electrifying speech after being honored for the Social Humanitarian Award, and left us in a standing-ovation as she continued to reclaim her time!
Issa Rae was honored with the ‘Star Power’ award and her speech was a resemblance of all her hard work and was truly an encouragement to others.
“My life changed when I focused on what I was good at, what I liked most about myself and what made me stand out” – Issa Rae
Yara Shahidi was awarded the Young, Gifted and Black award and gave an inspirational speech as to what it is to be a young black girl in this time.
Solange’s acceptance speech summed up the Black Girls Rock Awards in these few empowering words:
In such rigorous times as these it is so awesome to see our people come together to celebrate one another. There is nothing like seeing black women WIN. The night was filled with energetic energy and tons of Black Girl Magic!
Black women have stood up against so much, I think that we have had to survive, we’ve had to push through, we’ve had to lead, we’ve had to tap into this spiritual energy that we are really tuned into like no other. – Beverly Bond
Melanin was popping’ all throughout the show, check out some of the hottest fashion from our favs last night.
